"Shred-O-Mat" 6" x 6" oil on canvas

This was my mother's shredder from around the 1950's.   I use it every Sunday to make hash browns for my brunch.  It has five interchangeable blade discs that shred and slice.  Usually I have been painting smaller objects so on this one I had to be sure to get in the right scale.

Watching the UFO

Sold
The UFO has them under a spell and they can't take their beady little heads off of it.  Sometime tomorrow it will wear off and they will have lost 24 hours of their shiny little lives.  Life as they know it will never be the same.    Poor things.

"Deanna, head" 6"x8", oil on canvas

Deanna was back again for her second day of posing.   Concentrated on her head today and had lots of fun doing so.  We laughed a lot today.  It is such a pleasure to have this group of artist every Friday.  Starts the weekend off to a good start.   Thank you everyone!

"Yale, Yale the gang's all here" Claudia Hammer

This small pair of pliers are less than 4.5" long.   The smallest pair of adjustable pliers I've seen.   Painted this before I went to my family dinner.   I hope everyone had a warm Thanksgiving!

"Bottled up" 7"x5" oil painting

Sold
At first when I set this one up I thought it didn't have much color but when I was painting it there were lots of subtle color shifts.   This one was fun to paint.

Coffee & crossword 7"x5" oil painting

Sold
The cup is thin porcelain so the light source coming through the cup was quite beautiful and varied.  Getting the ellipse just right really makes the picture since it is in the foreground.

Small still life, "Morning paper" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold
I barely got this one done before it got dark.   The hardest thing is getting the cup and saucer elliptical, making sure that it is wider than tall since I'm looking down on it but not directly above.   If I were directly above the cup and saucer they would both be round.

Spectacles 5"x7" oil on canvas

SOLD
It was such a nice day today I had a hard time sitting still to paint.   Another painting of eye glasses which fit into a 5x7 format better than a square.   I want to thank all my followers and subscribers for appreciating my art.   I love getting all of your comments.    I am truly blessed to have this life.

Eight in the bag 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
When painting the shadows be sure you have the right value to start.  Here I started with a small amount of what I thought was the value and checked it, but it was too dark.   I kept adding yellow and white to lighten until it was the right value.   Now within that shadow area are numerous values and hues of that color.   Making a flat shadow color just won't do.

Deanna, 8"x10" 11/20/09 oil on canvas

I want to bring to your attention a very good artist  Suzanne Berry , she has some wonderful face drawings and painting that are wonderful.

Deanna was our model today.   Looking at it now I notice that it looks like her right arm floating.  I guess I forgot the surface it was resting on.  Oh well!   I think her positioning of her hands were particularly nice.   I might have concentrated more on her head, maybe even made it larger, except I wanted to include her hands.    When I start something any painting I always try to put a good amount of thought into the composition.   This is really a big part of the painting process.   Not to just start painting but to think about what you want to include and what to leave out and how to have a nice balance of space.

"Cups & bowls" 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold
I only heard from one person saying that their subscribed email of this listing came in just fine.   What about the rest of you that were having problems, was yesterday and today's email better?  If so what I did differently was that I did not copy what I did for my blog to the DPIAG, I posted them each separately.  It might have to do with the "new and improved" compose feature for  blogger.

Better to see you 6"x6", oil on canvas

Sold
I'm posting this separate from the International blog in hopes that it will be received better by those that are experiencing difficulty with overlapping type.   Please let me know if you can view it better.

I have all kinds of eyeglasses sitting around because I don't quite know what to do with them once I get a new prescription.   They are challenging to paint because you have to get the ellipse correct on each lens.    I like the light coming through the magnification of the lens

Small still life, "Gettin a grip" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

I have decided to make all paintings a flat purchase fee instead of the bid/auction format.   I personally don't like the auction process so why should I ask anyone to use it.   For my painting subjects I've been boycotting things that rot, so here is another tool painting.   Personally I love doing the tools, I have enough of them to keep me busy for the next 6 months.  I know the glow of the awl would have showed up better if I had used another background color but I thought the yellow was fun.   I've noticed I've used a lot of yellow lately.  Sup with that?

Small still life, "Bowl of balls" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold

The first painting I did this morning, I hated so I wiped it off and started on a different one.   This is the result.   I was so busy all day I almost didn't get it photographed.   I like to use natural day light and the day became overcast and the light was going so I hurried.  This picture is a little grainy and I had to lighten the exposure, maybe I can take a better one tomorrow but it is supposed to be overcast and rainy for a few days.  We'll see.   This one definitely looks better in person.

small still life, "Pinched" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

I started a completely different painting this morning, had to wipe it off and start a new one with a completely different subject.  I must say that I like the marbles.  They bring some element of light or excitement to the composition or maybe it is just my imagination.  I'm still investigating the overlapping type problem.   So far I know of 4 people having the problem.   Is anyone else having the problem that has not contacted me?   I'm curious as to how many people are experiencing this.

Portrait , "Jennifer" 8"x10" oil on canvas

Jennifer was our model today.  She works at cafe here in Louisville Kentucky most days of the week.   It is the first time she has modeled for us and she was great!   This is my second post today, the first one was dealing with the overlapping type problem some of you are having.   Today I'm posting to DPIAG first and then copying it to my blog.   Maybe this will help.

Small still life, "Amber light" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold
This took me way too long to paint (4 hours) but I wanted to get it to a point where I was happy with it.  Now it is time to move on to other things.    Love the way the light is refracted through the glass objects. That was my inspiration.

Small still life, "Bottled up" Claudia Hammer 6" x 6" oil on canvas

For those of you that are having trouble with overlapping type when viewing this blog it might be that you are using internet explorer or it might be you have recently changed your type size setting.  I am looking into this problem and will keep you informed  and will post all new information on the next blog.

I have been getting frustrated with the smooth surface of the Ampersand gesso board lately.   It has to be my board or my brushes or something else other than my painting, right?     So I glued some primed canvas to a few of the boards.   It probably could use a fresh coat of gesso but I find that the paint went on drier and I was less inclined to leave the base color show through.   I think it turned out ok despite all the trouble.

Small still life, "Upside down Rose" Claudia Hammer

Sold

Small still life, "Upside down rose"   6 in x 6 in, oil on gesso board.  Thought I'd try doing this rose again, even though it was pretty wilted.  The one in the bowl was even more wilted so I placed it upside down.    Several of you have told me that  on the last two postings that the type is coming out over top of the picture.   While other people who subscribe to my blog are not having a problem what so ever.   I don't know what the trouble is.   If anyone knows what the problem is please let me know.   I would like to fix it.

"Two Roses" 6"x6" oil on gesso board

Sold
The colors here did not photograph true to the painting.   I shot it with different settings and it just looks duller that the painting.    I procrastinated several hours before starting this painting.   I guess I was hesitant  in my ability to capture the roses.   The value of the background shadow and the shadow side of the vase are the same.  I might try this again with a different background.

"Three's a crowd" 5"x7" oil on canvas

Sold

I know I said I wasn't going to do any more things that rot but I wanted to do these one more time before I eat them. I have been eying them all week. One of them is ripe enough now. Persimmons color range varies, some are more orange and others are more golden yellow. I think that subtle color difference is one of the reasons I like to paint them plus the leafy thing on top is very interesting, unique really. It is all one piece and kind of square. In order to get the shadow color to appear darker than the light side, you must add a bit of the opposite color. In this case I used green and blue with a touch of white so it was not too dark.

Peggy 8"x10" oil on panel

The model did not show up today so Peggy volunteered to model for us instead of painting. She did a very good job of holding still and getting back into the pose. Thank you Peggy.

"Pair of Persimmons" 7"x5"

Sold

Persimmons have a square-ish shape to them and their leaves on top look square also. I find the orange color, which ranges from dark yellow to an orange color, hard to get mixing any combination of Cad lemon or Cad yellow pale with Cad red med or Alizarin Crimson so I cheated and used two different brands of Cad orange. I always find it strange that the colors can vary so much between brands.

"Prickly old things"

Sold
Thought I'd try my hand at prickly pears again. The painting I did of them during Carol Marine's workshop has still not been sent back to me. Someone picked it up by mistake and probably doesn't realize that they have it. Anyway found these in a local grocery. I didn't know they could be red. Does that mean that they are more ripe? Being lose is not as easy as it looks.

"Persimmon trio" 6"x6"

Sold

I tried to keep my brush strokes more painterly in this one. When ever I take a step forward I think I take a step back. I applied to the "Daily Painters .com" site back in August. It is a jury process. I just found out that I was not accepted to be on their site and I am kinda bummed about that. I guess there is something else out there for me. We all (artist) get rejected all the time for all kinds of reasons we just have to keep marching on and have faith.

Plumb crazy 5"x7" 11/1/09

Sold

These are part of my small collection of plumb bobs. They were included in my "Tool Portraits" show a few years ago. It is a little tricky to get all the angles and perspective right especially if I'm not laboring over it as I do in more serious paintings. All my latest paintings are available on my eBay store. Pass the word and make comments on my blog if you can. Thanks!
