"Jordan" 5"x7" pastel

To purchase, please contact me. $100

Today was the first time we have used Jordan in our Friday "Go Figure" group and I must say that he was great!   He held the pose very well, took short breaks and got back in to the pose while the rest of us were standing around talking and drinking coffee.  He made us work very hard today!   Love his hair and pigtails!

"Tarts!" 6"x6" oil on gessobord

SOLD
Can you believe it this is painting #300, soon it will be a year since I started this daily thing.

These little tarts at Cake Flour have been beckoning me for a few days.  The one with the chocolate crust is passion fruit, the red one is raspberry and the yellow one is lemon curd (hint, hint, citron).  They are one serving each and are just so cute all dressed up and ready for a party!   Also delicious!

"Yum! Butter Creme!" 6"x6" oil on gessobord

SOLD
It was cold and rainy when I walked over to Cake Flour this morning to get my painting subjects.    One of my favorites was there, a Spiced Sandwich Cookie, two fruit & nut cookies with ginger butter creme between.   The ginger flavor was exquisite!  The other was a Bourbon Carmel Cupcake, a chocolate cupcake with bourbon carmel butter creme icing!   This is the week preceding the Derby race and they have lots of wonderful and beautiful things to order for that derby celebration!

"Vegan Treats" 6"x6" oil on gessobord

To purchase, please contact me. $100

Sunday morning Cake Flour had these wonderful looking vegan treats so I thought I'd try them.  One was a blueberry scone and the second was raspberry almond muffin baked in this fabulous paper wrapper that resembled origami.  Both were delicious and moist with lots of berries.  You know how best laid plans go....that was my Sunday.  The worst part was that I could not consume the treats until I finished my painting on Monday, today!   It was worth the wait.   Who says I don't have will power?

"Cheesecake" 6"x6" oil on gessobord

Sold
Cake Flour makes these individual small cheesecakes that are beautiful to look at and delicious to eat.   Today's was a cheesecake that had cherries in the middle.   I used a glass plate that was my grandmother's because I liked the reflection the cake made.   Along with the layout composition I always think about the color scheme, turquoise, yellow and purple are complementary colors it you use the Munsell color wheel.

"Sin-namon Roll" 6"x6" oil on gessobord

Sold

The model did not show up today for our "figure group" so I stopped by the bakery on my way home and purchased this cinnamon roll to paint. (that is my excuse anyway)  I must say that what Cake Flour does is very sinful, tempting us every day with delicious pastry.  I exercised especially long today.

"Quiche Magnifique!" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

To purchase, please contact me. $100

When I arrived at Cake Flour today they still had some quiche du jour left and today's it was cheddar/kalamata olive.  Very yummy!!  The hardest part is not painting it, but having to paint it before I can eat it!   I had it for lunch and every bite was absolutely delicious!  I love the fact that it is savory and creamy.

Often after taking the picture and cropping it on the computer I notice something that I need to touch up or a spot I missed.   It is amazing to me that these things are not as noticeable to me when looking at the painting.

"Savory" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

As you can see I'm starting on a new subject today.  I decided to use a cup, plate and bakery item.   So I have to go to Cake Flour, the bakery down the street, every day (oh darn I'm just going to hate that!) and select an item to paint.   Then I will have to eat said item so they don't start stacking up and getting stale.   Every day the bakery has a sweet scone and a savory scone.  I usually go for the savory scone and today's was goat cheese and kalamata olive.  It was yummy!  I know I'm just going to have to suffer through this next set of 7 or so paintings.  I may even have to suffer through 10.

"Exhausted!" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

SOLD
After eating the apple pie Bottle and Marble wandered until they were exhausted!   When they came upon some soft leaves they decided to rest for a while, they were so full from eating pie and tired from all the walking.   They gazed up at the stars and thought "All's right with the world"

"Fork in the road" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

To purchase, please contact me.  $100

Bottle and Marble decided to go on a road trip.  They left the city taking the scenic road that headed for the country.  They had only gone about 32 miles when they came to a fork in the road.   Not knowing what to do, they stared at it a bit, then decided they were hungry so they went looking for some apple pie.

"Who are you?" 6'x6' oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Sold
Marble and Bottle had been through many experiences together and were quite comfortable with their relationship.  Out for a stroll one evening they encountered Stopper, and Marble, being the bold one, asked "Who are you?"   Stopper was amazed at the little rolly polly thing and replied "I have walked down this street every night for the past year and have never seen the two of you before!"   At this moment Bottle stepped up and said "Hi I'm bottle and this is my friend Marble."   And that is the short story of how the three met.

Today is exactly two weeks before the Kentucky Derby and the kick off event is tonight with Thunder over Louisville which is the biggest fireworks in the whole USA.   It is just about 9 blocks away and my street out front has been packed with cars since 2 this afternoon.   There was an air show all afternoon and my dog does not like the noise.   But the air is full of festivities and excitement.   I love "Thunder"!

"Yellow Umbrella" 8"x6" oil on canvas panel

Sold
Today my goal was to just paint brush strokes of color and keep it a color composition.   To paint the spokes of the umbrella I painted the structure post and supports then laid in spots of color around  them.  I find this more interesting than trying to be too realistic.   Brought in some of the blue sky color in on the yellow for some darker color shifts.

"An awkward moment" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Sold
It was an awkward moment this chance meeting.  They were rolling along and all of a sudden she loomed large in their path.   They said nothing as they stared at one another remembering their last meeting and how it all went wrong.

A few of you have asked how I get the round objects round.   Actually, and don't laugh, I start with a square, marking the top, bottom, left and right sides then I place 45° angles on all the corners thus making it  an octagon and then rounding it off with the background color.   Ovals, such as the top of the jar has, is done in the same manor except that it is a rectangle to start.

"I can't breathe!" 6x6in oil on Ampersand Gessobord

To purchase, please contact me.

Don't you hate it when you get that marble stuck in your throat!  I decided to use two colors that were grayed out.   The reflections inside the bottle were on the green side of gray which I thought was interesting against the blueish color.   I love making patterns the distorted reflections inside the bottle with liquid.

"Going for a walk" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessobord

Sold
OK, I know it is a stretch but if you imaging the leaf pattern being the park or bushes or trees or at least outdoors...they could be going for a walk!

I have decided to paint the same subject in different ways for 5 or more paintings.  The reason being that it will take me less time to set the still life up and make me explore different ways of seeing the objects.  I would like to be able to have some more time for my many commissions and other studio work and I think this will allow for that.

To purchase, please contact me.

Got this new bottle the other day and just had to paint it and just had to put a marble in it!  I swear I had no choice!  I know you all are thinking that I have been goofing off and not working but I really have been in the studio hard at work on some commissions.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

"Marbleous" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold
Thanks to one of my followers for giving me this wonderful title!
The base of this magnifying glass is a magnet which makes the base heavy so the arms can swivel.  It looks like some sort of mechanical alien.   So it is "Clingy" the alien giving the marble the once over or is it the evil eye?

"Thought I'd lost them!" 6"x6" Oil on Ampersand Gessoboard

Sold
I love doing the marbles.   I don't know what it is about them that are so fascinating to me.  Maybe it is the way the light is magnified when it passes through the small orb.   Maybe it's that the top side is dark while the underside is light, just like light when it goes through water.   They are so small but command so much attention.

"John the Farmer" pastel on Canson paper

John the Farmer
John was our model for today and he arrived with overalls hat and pitch fork (actually it was a manure fork but I would not know the difference, it looked good to me!)  Since there was a lot going on, I decided to work larger.  Using a 19.5" x 25.5" sheet of Canson warm grey paper I sketched it out and started work today and this is as far as I got.   I knew that I would be working on it for two sessions so I did not pressure myself to finish.   I will work on it next week and probably have the "fork" and more of his upper body.  Since it is not finished, it is not for sale yet.

"Bowled over" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessoboard

Available for $100, contact me.

Decided to do these apples before I ate all of them.  The shadow side of the apples has some green and blue along with the red.   If you use just dark red the color value will not be dark enough.

Yesterday was around 76 and today it is 83, WOW!    I had spring fever yesterday and just could not tie myself down to paint a daily.   Instead I did something much more fun, I cleaned my desk and then went outside and cleaned my patio.  It is so beautiful, the Tulip trees, Plum trees and Redbuds are all in bloom, the birds are singing and Derby is one month away!
