"Woodford" (#24) 6in x 6in oil

My Tuesday Painting Class asked me to demo a painting using a palette knife.   So I decided to set up an object, I would demo for10-15 minutes at a time and they would then do the same process from their viewpoint of the object.   Everyone painted a Woodford bourbon.

"Pappy Straight" 6in x 6in oil

I just came across 4 little bourbon paintings that I painted about two months ago and never posted!  Here is a small painting of Pappy Van Winkle, Family Reserve.

"Woodford #23" 8in x 8in oil

I know it has been a while since you have heard from me.   I have been busy working on larger pieces to put in Pyro Gallery.  I did manage to squeeze this small one in.   It is an 8"square, just a little larger than my usual 6" square.

Thank you for following my art.

"1946 Chevy Suburban Fire Truck" 6in x 8 in oil

This beauty was at a neighborhood car show last year.    I love everything about it, the color, the grill, the lights, and I am sure... the siren.

"Ready to eat" 6in x 6in oil

This was the demo I painted for my Tuesday Painting Class.  One of my students wanted me to show how I painted silverware so I put in a fork.   My favorite part is the fork shadow.

"Rome, orange building" 8in x 10in oil

For a change of pace I thought I would paint from one of my travel pictures.   Took this picture when I was in Rome a few years ago.   I love the way shadows play on the building and the contrast with the opposite colors, blue and orange.  This one is a little larger than my usual daily painting.

"Woodford in the light" 6in x 6in oil

I don't know how popular Woodford Reserve is in the rest of the country but it is very popular here in Kentucky.    I am painting some bourbons in preparation for the St James Art fair here in Louisville.

"Straight up Blanton's" 6in x 6in oil

Blanton's is a great bourbon.   Not only that, but you can collect the stoppers.   On each stopper is a different horse/jockey image and imprinted a letter.    If you collect them they can spell out BLANTON'S.    Besides being a collectors item, it is a wonderful smooth bourbon, one of the tops on my list.

"Dude in a hat" 11in x 14in oil

Someone brought a hat today, when he put it on he decided he looked good in the hat.
I started this 3 hour sketch with a very loose gesture drawing using paynes grey, covering all the shadow areas.   It made for a quick map to show where the light and dark areas were.  All this was done in the first 15 minutes.  That left the rest of the time to play with color/value.

"Woodford reflection" 6in x 6in oil

Bourbon is considered by Congress to be "America's Native Spirit".   Whiskey can be made anywhere, but to be called bourbon, it must be made in the U.S.    95% of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky.   When I go to the liquor store there are so many to choose from, well over 100, it's confusing.   This one is Woodford Reserve.

"Brownie Hawkeye" 6in x 6in oil

Many pictures were taken in the 1950's at my house with this little camera.   Besides being part of my past, I love it's cute cube shape, and there is something about looking into the glass viewfinder and seeing everything upside down that is fascinating.

"Empty Bowl" 6in x 6in oil

This is the third in the series of 6.   This one is smaller than the first two.   The challenge is to use the same objects in 6 painting.   This is a good method for learning composition.

"Standing guard" 8in x 8in oil

This was the demo for my Tuesday class.   On Monday, we talked about painting  the same objects at least 6 times which forces you to think about composition and design.  So here is my second one.

"What makes Red so special?" 8in x 8in oil

All the other plump plums are standing around wondering why Red is so special, why does he get to sit in the green chair?

"Sparkling Sun Hat" 12in x 12in oil

"Peonies in Pink" 8in x 10in oil

With my glasses off, I painted most of this painting.   The tricky part is mixing the right color, value without seeing the palette very well.  At least I could see where the palette was!   I had lots of laughs and finished it with my glasses on!

Self portrait Demo #2 11" x 14" oil

My Tuesday class wanted to do their self portraits (they just can't be upstaged by the Monday class) so I did a second demo for them.   I know, it looks a lot like the one I did a couple of months ago, but there is one small difference.   The first one I did  I just happened to be on Percocet because I had smashed my finger (my non painting hand) so I had to have 6 stitches.   The demo had been planned for weeks so I had to do it.   I do think this one turned out better. ;-D

There are about 58 photos that one of my students, Stan Sternberg, took. To view the Demo please click here.

Here is the first demo that I did while on percocet and my eyes do look a little glazed...  And just to let you know, my finger is doing fine, the smashed bone is healed and there is just a scar.

"Roses and Ribbon 3" 8" x 8" oil

I feel that the roses came out pretty well in this painting.    They are in a silver mint julep cup and almost everyone here in Louisville Ky has one of these.   Mine came from my Dad and his initials are engraved on the cup.    I added a woven copper ribbon in the composition... it needed somehting...

Fallen leaf 8" x 10" oil

It was a struggle painting this one today.   At first I could not get a good composition on a square format so I went with an 8x10.   The surface was a slick masonite panel with a layer of very smooth almost shiny gesso.   So at first the paint was slick and showed the brush marks.   After I had blocked in basic color/value everywhere it was time for lunch.   That was the best thing because that allowed time for the paint to soak in a bit and when I came back from lunch it was easier to paint on.   Next time I will put on a layer of grey acrylic before painting.

Doesn't this car look like it is smiling?   I just love two tone cars, they are like spectator shoes.!   The Mini Cooper is and I wish they would make more cars in two colors!  Design wise it would make the cars more appealing... in my little opinion.

Study in warm and cool 15" x 18" oil

I actually painted this a week ago but the dark paint glared so much in the photo I decided to wait until it dried and I could put on a wax varnish.   I like using the Gamblin Cold Wax  which can be used as a medium or varnish.
